Elliot takes the same walk through his neighborhood every night. He knows the streets, the turns, the ordinary sounds after dark. But tonight, a sudden fog conceals the way ahead—and a frightened stranger insists that someone is coming. The man speaks of a ruler who demands tribute from everyone he encounters. Elliot wants to dismiss him. Then the streetlights begin to fail, and he hears claws striking pavement somewhere beyond the mist. With his familiar neighborhood disappearing around him, Elliot must decide how much to trust a stranger whose terror seems increasingly justified. Whoever is approaching expects an offering.
