In 1869, a troubled American doctor boards a whaling ship in Aberdeen, hoping two months at sea will salvage what remains of his career. Captain McPhail expects a profitable voyage, and his crew has little patience for a physician who cannot stomach their work. But as the ship pushes north, the doctor begins to fear something beyond the cruelty of his companions.
